Kemi Badenoch MP local Chelmsford City Councillor Mike Steel recently visited Smudge, an independent vintage interior design company based in Roxwell, Chelmsford.
Founded by Chloe and Marcus Hodges, Smudge specialises in saving antique furniture, before carefully restoring it and selling it on.
Chloe and Marcus shared insights with Mrs Badenoch on the journey from a hobby to creating a business, establishing significant connections within the Film and TV industry. As the sole buyer for the business, Marcus focuses on minimal restoration, allowing scratches, stains, and dents to tell the story of each piece. Chloe, a qualified Interior Architect and the driving force behind Smudge's online presence and showroom, highlighted the importance of sustainable choices in design.
Mrs Badenoch and the team at Smudge discussed the ways in which small businesses like Smudge can receive local help and business advice. Saffron Walden and Chelmsford have Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) which work to support local businesses, whilst the Essex Chamber of Commerce and local councils provide a wealth of support and information.
Mrs Badenoch commended Smudge for its dedication to sustainability and its unique approach to furniture craftsmanship. The visit emphasised the crucial role of small businesses like Smudge in promoting environmentally conscious practices and contributing to the economy of the local community.
Commenting, Mrs Badenoch said:
“It was great to visit Smudge in Roxwell, a unique small business offering some beautiful antique pieces.
“Local councillor Mike Steel and I met with founders Chloe and Marcus Hodges to discuss some of the opportunities and challenges that come with owning one.
“I will continue to champion our local small businesses. Smudge’s showroom is just off Stonehill Road, so if you are in the area, do pop in!”
Commenting, Chloe Hodges said:
“We really appreciated Kemi taking the time to visit our showroom in Roxwell. She listened in regards to both the positives and the struggles in running a small business at this time.
“At Smudge, we are dedicated to being as sustainable as possible. Mindful consumption is at our heart – buying better and buying less. The presence of having antiques in our home creates a sense of nostalgia and history, connecting us to the past and adding character to our living space.”
